Queen of Hearts

It was a late Sunday evening. We were just preparing to go out for a heartlander's dinner fare.

He held out a deck of cards and asked me to think of a card. I knew he had some tricks up his sleeve but how spectacular could his trick be with a deck of cards? Casually, I asked for the Queen of Hearts all while sleuth-watching for any slick hand movements I might missed. A few short, dramatic shuffling of cards later, he asked to check out what's hidden beneath the dish towel beside me.

It was the Queen of Hearts card.

I laughed and laughed. He laughed along, rather pompously I must say. His trick's going good.

I could just imagined his state of high when I requested for the Queen of Heart card. That was what prompted my laughter. What a jackpot hit for him. I asked him how he managed to keep his face dead straight before the final reveal and we laughed hard again.

He could have hidden other cards. Or I could have requested for any other cards. Both ways, the probability for choosing the same card is one out of fifty-two. To him, it may be a random case of Midas touch. To me, this is mental bondage. For a couple together for six years. That night, even the familiar path to the coffeeshop for dinner seemed moonlit to me.

Girls just love romantic notions huh?
