Tom Yum Steamboat... mmm...
A few days ago, Auntie Iris (our landlord) and family were helping us to clear their antique debris from our flat which they had accumulated before we moved in. While Mr. Gecko and I were helping out, taking item by item to deem if the things were "throwable", "recycable" or still "keepable", one of the items we uncovered was this old but still usable electric steamboat cooker which Auntie Iris insisted we could make good use of it.
Well, Aunties Iris could very well echo Mr. Gecko's and my sentiments. Visions of a LA-vish steamboat buffet spread in our cosy nook begun to cloud our minds. We were already setting dates for the steamboat party! Both of us were so sick of our daily heartlander's food fare then, this little steamboat pot came at the right time to sizzle our tastebuds!
Last Sunday (yesterday) was settled as a most appropriate date for steamboat spread as Channel 5 was airing the X-MEN movie during dinner time. We went to the supermarket for the fresh ingredients, Mr. Gecko insisted he's only for vegetarian tom yum steamboat while I simply and sinfully could not resist thoughts of happy fishballs and alike bobbling away in the pot. Just this once, I must have my fishballs! Cutting the veggies was the most daunting tasks at hand as Mr. Gecko likes his in small pieces. But luckily, he offered to cut the veggies and I was to lay the table, buy the tom yum paste and boil the rice.
We soon had the lettuce, red pepper bells, shitake and chinese mushrooms, japanese egg tofu, egg, carrots, cauliflowers and a few of my fishballs in the boiling lava red tom yum broth. The broth hit just at the right spicy note for me whereas Mr. Gecko thought it was weak for him. We were then happily tucking into this tom yum steamboat and watching X MEN on telly. Not being experienced cooks, both of us were unsure when the vegetables were properly cooked. Towards the end, most of the veggies ended up over-cooked, limpy and yellowish. But I could say there was no better way to spend that weekend, it was fulfilling in more than one way...
But I do not think we will try another steamboat in a long time to come, for me at least. It was just too too much work and veggies steamboat does not entice you to indulge in more than twice a year I guess. It was just fun fare for a change.
I do think Mr. Gecko would rather stick to his staple of maggie mee goreng.

ha... i tried. But maltese dog seemed to think the sliced, overcooked mushrooms were bloated brown lizzies!! It was whimpering pitifully at the sight of it, I just could not bear to let it go through all these gastronomic torture...
